On Thursday, thirty of us left the campground and made our way through Maggie Valley to a lodge and stone building nestled in the hills on a 4,500 foot high bluff. There we would eat together, family-style, in a cozy dining room. Recipes passed down through the family featured farm to table fare in the rustic atmosphere. Ginger and Bud Shinn traveled from Florida to Maggie Valley with their four children for many years and then made the decision to purchase the Lodge in 1983 when it came up for sale. The Shinn Family continues to share the lodge with visitors. Daughter Tracey runs the Lodge today and continues the legacy. Our dinner began at 6:30 with the ringing of the dinner bell and soon bowls and platters of food were wheeled to our table for serving. We passed them around one at a time and couldn't wait to dig into salad, beets, yeast rolls and butter, mashed potatoes, squash casserole, pork tenderloin, baked apples, hot cabbage, and their famous tomato pie. And we tried desperately to save a bit of room for strawberry shortcake. Thanks to Mark and Jean Stoffan for arranging this fabulous evening for us and I predict we will return in 2025. Thanks to you also for dropping by to pick up your Postcard this evening. See you soon.
