Many of you know my love of Williamsburg. I'm not sure that you know I have another blog, a seasonal one, that features photos I have taken there. Postcards will be taking a vacation for the holidays, but you are invited to take a peek at my snapshots over on Window On Williamsburg. Just click on the photo and I will zip you over there!
Evenin' everyone! I hope you are all enjoying this unseasonable December weather. We broke a record today here in the NC foothills, but I'm afraid it will be coming to an end soon. Many of you know my love of Williamsburg. I'm not sure that you know I have another blog, a seasonal one, that features photos I have taken there. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Joyous December to you all.
Greetings everyone from Colonial Williamsburg. As the days wind down to our departure on Friday, Becky and I are checking off areas to explore. Today we concentrated on Prince George Street and Palace Green. The Wythe House has been transformed to Washington's Headquarters for several months and we wanted to see that. The Brush-Everard House is one of our all-time favorites, so we stopped in there for a tour. Lunch was downtown at Retro's where we sat at the window to eat birthday fried pickles and watch the world go by. Oh, I should mention that today is Becky's birthday! We had a behind-the-scenes tour at Bruton Heights at 2;30, supper with the gang at Honey Butter's at 5:00, and finished up with a program at Bassett Hall. It's been a long, but very fun day! Here's a variety of Postcard photos for you to enjoy this evening... Tomorrow will be another big day as our Grand Illumination week comes to an end. Join me tomorrow evening for one last Postcard from The 'Burg!
Colonial Williamsburg does many things well. Up at the top of the list would be the interpreters and street performers. They stroll Duke of Gloucester Street and interact with each other, as well as with visitors. I enjoy listening to them, but I really enjoy capturing them in photos. We always see some colonial wannabes who dress in costume and stroll the street getting their photos made along with the employees. I always get a kick out of that. Today there were quite a few interpreters and performers out and about. I think my favorite one of the day would be the fellow hanging out a window above the entrance to Chowning's Tavern. He was reading from a book to those of us below listening! Please enjoy the rest of the faces in this special place called Colonial Williamsburg on this December Tuesday! It's a tradition during our Grand Illumination week to go to the Williamsburg Antique Mall on a cloudy, rainy day. Because it's the Christmas season, it's an especially fun trip. The vendors pull out their vintage trees, ornaments, cards, books, carolers, and knick knacks to fill up their display booths. Becky is always searching for Shiny Bright ornaments, spun cotton figures, Putz houses, empty ornament boxes, blow molds, and basically, anything that catches her eye! Did I find some bargains? You bet, but I spent most of my time capturing the decor, singing along to the songs playing overhead, and getting jazzed up to decorate when I get home. Enjoy my holiday snaps... The sun will be back out tomorrow, so I will strolling around the Historic Area searching for unusual photo opportunities. Drop by tomorrow evening to see if I found any. Nite, nite from Williamsburg.
Happy Grand Illumination Sunday! Today is the day the tour buses roll in to join the thousands of locals and other visitors for a day full of music, merriment, and fireworks. Chairs and blankets were out early in all three fireworks locations. We celebrated our day with hot gingerbread cookies straight out of the oven at the Raleigh Tavern Bakery. From house to house, through backyard gardens, and around outbuildings, we meandered all over the Revolutionary. We paused to sit on benches and do some people watching before heading off in another direction. My photos today feature that same kind of variety and I hope you enjoy seeing what Grand Illumination Sunday looks like. It's an inside joke, but Rich, Sue, Becky, and I would like to thank Bob Suber for the gorgeous weather we are having here in Williamsburg for our week-long Grand Illumination stay! On this Saturday as people poured into town for the festivities, Becky, Sue, and I took a leisurely morning stroll east and west on Francis Street to see what we could see...wreaths hanging on doors, sprays over doorways, garlands hanging underneath window sills, small decorations on windows, sheep in the pastures, and colonial odds and ends. Here's a bit of what we saw... Greetings from Williamsburg, VA, where Becky and I will be for the next 7 days enjoying Grand Illumination with Rich and Sue. That means that I will have a holiday Postcard to deliver to you each evening recounting our day as we get into the holiday spirit, look at all the wreaths on the buildings, attend some outstanding musical programs, and eat at our favorite places. We don't vary our routines very much from year to year, so you will see similar photos from Christmases past. Our weather is supposed to be outstanding and that will be a nice change from having to wear multiple layers of clothes like we did for the last two visits. My fingers are looking forward to not freezing while trying to snap some photos for you. So without further ado, here are some pics from today... |
