We were successful on all four accounts. After our typical leisurely ease into the day, we loaded up in Lois' car and hit the road. Oconee Station wasn't the easiest place to find. We thought there might be a more direct route since the Foothills Trail connects it to our campground. But that wasn't the case.
Originally a military compound and later a trading post, Oconee Station offers a unique look back into 18th- and 19th-century South Carolina. Oconee Station itself is a stone blockhouse that was used as an outpost by the SC State Militia from about 1792 to 1799. The other structure on the property, the William Richards House, is also an original building.
Early afternoon and our stomachs were growling, so a slow drive through Walhalla gave us some options for eating outside with the pups. We chose Carolina Pizza Company right on Main Street. Our table was in the shade, the pizza was excellent, and we enjoyed watching the traffic go through Walhalla.
