There are 140 campsites in the park with water and electric. The great majority of those sites are pull-thrus, but only a few are actually on one of the two lakes. The setting is rustic and wooded, with gravel roads throughout. | Oconee State Park has just about everything it takes to be a relaxing mountain getaway. In addition to camping, there are Civilian Conservation Corps-built cabins, a lake with a swimming area, canoe rentals, fishing, putt-putt, and hiking trails. With 1,165 acres, it serves as the western trailhead for the Foothills Trail, a 77-mile hike on the Blue Ridge Escarpment. |
Outside the office is a statue honoring the men of the CCC who helped build Oconee SP in 1935. Many of the original structures remain today . . . the old waterwheel site, water fountains, park cabins, a shelter, and swimming bathhouse.
Thanks for picking up your Postcard today and if you drop back by tomorrow, I'll have another to share with you about our four days at Oconee.
