The Museum of Appalachia was less than one mile from our KOA and since it is affiliated with the Smithsonian, we knew it would be a grand place to visit. It was also their fall membership drive day and we both got in free!
On the property is a unique collection of pioneer buildings and artifacts that harken back to the days of Old Appalachia in the Tennessee hills. For over half a century, John Rice Irwin amassed thousands of everyday items from the mountain folk who lived here.
The Museum tells the stories of these people in their words and through the artifacts they left behind. Authenticity is emphasized and the cabins appear as though the family has just left to work in the fields or go to Sunday meeting.
Rebecca and I both enjoyed our stroll through the village and shared stories with each other about memories of our Southern grandparents. I'm glad I got to experience this Museum with her and now I'd like to share the experience with you.
