We spent the majority of our day off and on Highway A1A as we headed south to the stops we had planned. Traffic was light as we passed through beach community after beach community. Our first stop of the morning was at Fort Matanzas National Monument. It was ten years ago that we were here with Murphy. Not being able to leave her in the car unless we found shade and didn't linger too long certainly affected our travel. This time around we were able to enjoy our stop at a leisurely pace and that meant walking some nature trails while waiting on the park to open at 9:00. | The fort sits across the inlet from the visitor center and is accessible only by boat. It guarded St. Augustine's southern river approach. The remaining portion of the fort dates to 1740 |
Up before 7:00 and out the door before 8:00...we got an early start to our Florida day! Our day was off to a fine start and soon we were cruising down the A1A with the windows down and the sunroof open. With the temperature climbing up into the 70's, we decided to make a quick stop at Flagler Beach and compare it with our Carolina beaches. The first thing we noticed was the color and texture of the sand!
