But I promised you one last Postcard from the Rolling Home Tour and it's time to tell you about Atwood Lake Park.
Atwood Lake is located east of New Philadelphia on State Road 212. It's one of five man-made lakes belonging to the Muskingum Watershed Conser-vancy District. Atwood Lake Dam was constructed in 1937 on the Indian Fork Creek for the purpose of flood control. There are 1540 acres of water, 28 miles of shoreline, and 3,000 acres of land. |
On our side of the lake, the north side, there was also a registration center, activity center, nature center, game room, camp store, laundromat, swimming beach, fishing pier, vacation cabins, and trails. Across from the peninsula, there's a large marina and very nice restaurant called the Lighthouse Bistro, where we ate several times.
Our group camping area, with the exception of those pit toilets, was pretty OK. There were no designated camping spaces, no paving or gravel to park on, just lots grass. Four hook-ups were located on a central power post, so that kinda dictated where we parked. With our grab handles, we were pushing and pulling our T@Bs all over the place for the perfect spot and/or lake view.
Inside the group area loop, there were picnic tables and a great space for our cookouts and potluck. It's also where the vendors set up by day and we had our campfires by night. There were several water spigots spread out for all to use since we didn't have any at our sites. All in all, I liked where we were.
We were all encouraged to fill out an evaluation form before leaving and make suggestions for next year. I would bet money that every single person mentioned the bathroom facilities. The head fellow from Atwood Lake told us that there are plans to add showers in our group camping area, but we all have our doubts that they will be in place for next year.
That being said, would I go back? You betcha!! Would I love to have a regular bathroom with showers, toilets, and sinks? Of course I would, but we survived quite well with our set up.
OK...that's it for the Rolling Home Rally collection of Postcards. I'm going to take a few days off and I'll see ya first thing next week!
