The park is actually divided into 3 sections, but its first stop and headquarters are located in Washington Monument State Park. We kind of stumbled into this, but it turned out to be a great unexpected first stop.
1. Washington Monument State Park - this is the first completed monument to honor George Washington. It served as a Union sign state during the Civil War. The Appalachian Trail crosses right in front of it. We chatted with a volunteer in the visitor center and he gave us a history of the battle and put everything into a clear picture for us.
