We also bypassed the Charlottesville KOA after reading some less than stellar reviews and the campground's own warning about the roads leading in. So that left three . . . Staunton/Walnut Hills KOA, Shenandoah Valley Campground, and North 340 Campground.
We loved Staunton/Walnut Hills, but unfortunately the areas of the campground were really spread out and not conducive to visiting that we are so famous for. Getting 60+ campsites close together would be impossible.
In addition, it didn't have a pavilion or building for us to gather in. But we loved it so much that we made a reservation for the Sunday night that we travel to MD in August for the DOG! Becky and I think it would be an awesome place for a Dutch oven gathering.
The pavilion situation is not ideal, one row of sites has quite a slope and the sites along the river are tiny. You cannot even see the river for the thick underbrush. They could easily handle all of us, so we decided that this campground makes the cut to the next round.
The bathrooms are great and there is a heated pool. They have a nice pavilion, but it only has 6 picnic tables and there are big signs everywhere that say NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES . . . oops! They don't even have a printed campground map for people to reference.
