Yesterday was Day 10 of my first soap making endeavor. You might remember that after my batch of tea tree castile soap was poured during my class at The Soap Shed, I had to wait ten days before turning it out and cutting it. I pressed the top of the soap with my finger and making a small indentation, I hesitated to flip over the container to get the soap out. But I just couldn't stop myself! All went smoothly as it popped cleanly out of the plasticware onto my cutting board. Because of its thickness and the fact that I didn't get to let it cool down slowly under a lid with a blanket or towels on top, I was worried that the middle might not be cured yet. There was no way of knowing, so I proceeded with the next step . . . cutting it into bars. My cutter slid in nicely, but when the two sides didn't pop apart, I knew I was in trouble. The middle was gummy and soft, but I was committed at this point. I continued cutting and wound up with the ugliest, misshapen bars you have EVER seen! The smell of tea tree oil was heavenly though and since Wendy and I will be the only ones using the bars, I don't care a hoot about what they look like. The next step is to let the bars dry for 3 to 5 weeks before using them. They will sit out in my studio for that time period. After only twelve hours of being out there, I can already smell a wonderful aroma coming through the door. I am waiting on a package to arrive with four essential oils that I purchased online. After they arrive and I make a couple wooden molds, it will be time to pull out all my supplies and have another go at it. I haven't decided on the recipe I will use, but rest assured, you'll be the first to know!

If I get to a point that there will be a need for a name, it will be the 6th Street Soap Company. Comments are closed.
