Sadly, The End Of The Road

When we woke up this morning, it was with a bit of sadness.  We knew that today we would wrap up our trek on Route 6.  Just east of Edinboro, Route 6 splits into two roads, the regular route and 6N. Since we spent the night in Erie, we were able to do the entire section of 6N (starting at 0 North) and pick up 6 where we left it yesterday just east of Edinboro.  I know that is probably confusing for you since you cannot look at our map.

Before doing that though, we took a little detour out to Presque Isle State Park.   The state park is on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie and it seemed like a good way to start our day.  There we would see hundreds of cottonwood trees giving off "cotton snow" that covered everything!

We drove to the Perry Monument, stopped at a couple of the beaches, watched some fishermen catch some BIG fish, and saw the lighthouse which is now a private residence.

At the entrance to the park was  Sally's Diner, campground, ice

cream parlor, and amusement park.  I'm sure that when the weather warms up and the summer season starts in earnest up here, these places are packed.

Back on Route 6, the countdown began.  We saw more cool murals, but the one honoring the Pittsburg Steelers found on the side of a garage was the best one yet!

Along the almost 400 miles we have traveled, we have lost count of the number of ice cream stands, hotdog joints, and dairy bars we passed.  Knowing that we were running out of miles, we decided that we would stop at one for lunch.  In Saegertown we spotted the Dairy Inn and pulled right in.  I got a Hippie Hotdog and Bec got a footlong.  To top it off, we  had Perry's Ice Cream for dessert!

Near mile marker 23 in Meadville, we found the Read Between The Signs project.  An art collaboration between Allegheny College and PennDOT has resulted in environmental art from recycled road signs.  It is whimsical, colorful, and as you drive along Route 6, totally unexpected!

The very last stop on our east to west journey was at the Linesville Spillway to see "where the ducks walk on the fish."  There are hundreds of carp and hundreds of ducks and they are all fighting for the food thrown over the rail for them.  There just aren't any words to describe the feeding frenzy!

After seeing deer along the interstate munching on grass, a near disaster between three trucks going 70 mph, and driving straight into a storm with tornado warnings, we found the nearest motel in Fairmont, WV and we are safely in for the evening.

Thanks so much for traveling along with us for the last ten days through VA, MD, NY, and PA.  I'll take a few days off from writing Postcards and will chat with you again next week!  Happy trails!!
