For all you new Postcard readers, we have a weeklong celebration here in Newton. It began after the Civil War when Confederate soldiers would come to the Courthouse to pick up their pensions and would be honored for their bravery and valor. That celebration continues to this day and now honors all veterans of all wars. It is the longest continually running patriotic celebration of its kind in the country and something that we are very proud of.
Sunday is the day that old cars chug into town, park around the square and side streets, and are on display all afternoon. Around 5:30, they pull out of their parking spots and cruise around town like we used to do as teens up until 1972 when the city fathers put a stop to it by changing the traffic patterns from two-way to one-way.
As I always do, I walked downtown to join Becky for lunch and to take a car stroll. She parks her Carolina blue VW bug and we become part of the celebration! I'd love for you to join in as well for the red, white, and blue of Sunday Cruisin'.
