I rose up through the ranks from camper to counselor-in-training (CIT) to counselor to program director. To this day I remember the words to the songs we sang, still have many mementoes hanging on the wall at the cabin, and love my tribe, the Seminoles.
When Becky and I found out that Closing Ceremonies for second session were yesterday afternoon at 3:00, there was absolutely no discussion needed...we were going!
This past year, a brand new dining hall was constructed and it was the first time I have seen it in person. I followed the construction on the camp blog but was not expecting it to be so big and grand!
We walked past the stables and riding ring. Bec hadn't seen the improvements made to Lake Doris that included a new swimming dock, canoe dock, diving area, and water slide. She always enjoyed swimming in that lake, but I remember the slimy bottom and how cold it was...LOL.
We took a seat downstairs before moving up into the balcony for all the festivities. By the time 3:00 rolled around, the entire Mike was full of parents, friends, counselors, staff, and several hundred excited campers. It brought back so many memories!
If you look carefully, you'll see three girls sitting on the steps in front of the stage all dressed in red. The girls who won the awards I just mentioned, were all from the same tribe, Choctaw.
I looked at Becky and said, "Choctaw are going to win The Banner" and within seconds, that's exactly what happened. I cannot explain to you the bedlam that occurs when the winner is announced, but I did capture it as it happened.
Have a wonderful weekend and I'll be back tomorrow to tell you about Black Mountain's Sourwood Festival.
