When it comes to the beauty of nature, whether it be plants, gardens, or birds, you don't have to look far in Williamsburg to find it. When it comes to the beauty found in architecture, it's found with every turn of the head in the Rev City. Under glorious sunny skies, I found beauty everywhere I ventured today. Thanks for dropping by this evening and allowing me to share the beauty with you. I hope to see you again tomorrow!
If our day was judged solely on the total amount of sunshine, then it would have been a failure. But since our day was filled with garden paths explored, colonial babies sticking close to momma, the faces of CW employees, colorful flowers tucked here and there, a drive on the Colonial Parkway, a ship etched in glass, and much, much more, then our day was rated at a TOTAL success!! Thank you for letting me share my colonial day with you and I'll see ya tomorrow evening.
I do not ever recall driving to Williamsburg on the kind of day we had today. Rain, pouring, torrential rain! A normal five hour trip took six, but we drove slower, were extra vigilant for standing water, and made it safely by two o'clock. Our first order of business was lunch. With no discussion whatsoever, we headed for The Cheese Shop where we sat at the window looking out at Merchants Square. And then a most amazing thing happened...it stopped raining. For dessert, we did what we always do...walk over to The Peanut Shop and get free samples of their chocolate-covered delicacies. While Wendy spent a bit of time in Barnes & Noble, I walked just a short distance down Duke of Gloucester. They used to have a sign that said welcome to the Historic Area. The focus has now changed from the Historic Area to the Revolutionary City and as a result, this is the sign that now welcomes visitors. We headed over to the Woodlands Hotel to check in since it was nearing 4:00. Our room at the Cascades is on the end and is bigger than the one we had at Grand Illumination in December. That's nice since there are three of us here for the week. Not wanting to do any more sitting, we struck back out for a bit of strolling despite the gloomy skies. Wendy likes to take photos too, so we were scoping out some unusual perspectives to capture. A trip to Farm Fresh wrapped up our first day. We are cozy and warm in our room and settled in for the evening. I predict that lights out will be fairly early tonight.
Thanks for stopping by this evening to pick up your Springtime Postcard from Williamsburg! With the lure of a free night at the Cascades compliments of Colonial Williamsburg, a quickly-planned trip has been called for. The timing couldn't be better! Tomorrow morning bright and early, Becky, Wendy, and I will hit the road for my happy place...Williamsburg, VA. We anticipate seeing thousands of garden flowers, newborn baby lambs romping in the meadows, and exploring the nooks and crannies of the landscape. Please join me each evening for a Springtime Postcard and let me share the beauty and serenity of April in Williamsburg.
Knowing that it was going to be a beautiful day down in Columbia, Becky and I loaded up 2/3rds of the Schnauzer Herd and headed off to Sesquicentennial State Park. This South Carolina State Park is just a few miles east off of I-77 and was an easy 2 1/2 hour drive for us. We were warned about the copious amount of pollen falling from the pines, but it didn't stop us from visiting with our un-rally friends. When we pulled up, we found the entire gang hanging out at R&Ts-pod and it was great to see them and get some much needed hugs! We got Murphy and Gracie squared away in their pen and we just enjoyed sitting around chatting. When stomachs started growling around noon, Rob cranked up the grill and we got ready for our potlunch of burgers, dogs, and all the fixin's. Even though my un-rally plans got sidetracked, I sure did have fun talking non-stop about camping past and present for a few hours. I see Rob & Trisha and Rich & Sue on a regular basis, so it was a treat to see Morgan, Dixie, Lois, and Sandra today! Take a look at their campers and you'll see a fine layer of yellow pollen on everything. Rob said it looked like it was snowing when he pulled into the campground yesterday! We saw folks walking around the campground wearing masks...it was that bad!! Mid-afternoon, Morgan said she needed a nap and several others needed a junkin' fix, so the Newton crew packed up and headed home.
It's been said that laughter is the best medicine, but I would add friends to that quote. Thanks campers for letting me come out and play for a short while!! A former student, now friend, is an early morning runner. This past week she was out for her usual pre-sunrise run and a crack in a sidewalk tripped her. She fell on the pavement and suffered some nasty scrapes on her knees and hands. But she bounced back up and continued her jog. Over the course of the last week, I got tripped up by a very big crack in the side walk by the name of skin cancer. Given my history of teaching physical education, days spent at the beach, and several summers working as a lifeguard and swimming pool manager, I knew deep down that it was only a matter of time until I would be dealing with the issue of skin cancer. I'm sharing this with you to explain the absence of Postcards in the last 10 days and also to ask that you keep me and my surgeon, Dr. Charles Johnson, in your thoughts and prayers. It also explains why I'm not sitting at my Come Out and Play Un-rally this morning with a cup of coffee in hand enjoying camping time with my buddies. My intention is to stay vigilant, watch out for those cracks, and pick myself up and carry on if I do get tripped up. Have a wonderful weekend my friends, I certainly intend to! |
