Yesterday was a very special day in our family. My niece Jessie, graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Education. She will be the fifth teacher in our family and we are all so proud of her, we could just burst! Becky and I drove to Fort Mill to join the convoy to Columbia. We arrived around 1:00, but the commencement didn't actually start until 3:00. Using my new Nikon for the first time, I took over 100 photos of the occasion before, during and after. Saturday afternoon's commencement was actually the second one of the day held at the Colonial Life Arena. Once inside we made a quick decision where to sit to get the best view of Jessie walking across the stage. Turns out that we could actually see her seat on the floor too and we had a great vantage point in a pretty big place. With two hours to kill, we just sat and chatted, met Jim's parents who arrived to sit with us, met Jessie's roommate Sam, and took in the whole atmosphere. The two hours passed quickly and the ceremony began right on time. Becky and I were tickled to death that Dawn Staley, USC's women's basketball coach would be delivering the commencement address! She took the Lady Gamecocks to the Final Four this year. There were several colleges graduating and Jessie's School of Education was the first to be recognized. I couldn't make up my mind whether to photo graph her coming across the stage or snap a photo of her up on the big screen. In the end I chose to capture her walking, but my timing was off just a bit. Becky did get an excellent shot of her though! At the conclusion of the ceremony, Jess bounded up the stairs to greet us and of course we are hugging and snapping photos of her! Out in the lobby, I finally got my photo with her! Congratulations Jess . . . it was a very special day for us all. I love ya to the moon and back!!
