- it is the county seat of Madison County
- it sits on the French Broad River
- it has several authentic general and hardware stores
- it has a lively music and arts scene
- 1862 Union sympathizers and Confederate deserters raided the town to get enough salt to survive the winter
- it was an important stop on the Buncombe Turnpike in the mid-1800's that stretched from Tennessee to South Carolina
- it has survived three major floods...1902, 1916 and 1996
