I hope Ruth will ask me back again next year during their NA studies, because I had a blast today hangin' with the fifth graders! It sure felt good to be back in the classroom!!
Some my Native American flutes Today I got to hang out with 105 fifth graders at Mountain View Elementary School. A former colleague of mine invited me several months ago to come do a program on Native American flutes for their fifth graders who are studying Native American history. I always jump at a chance like this! So I packed up about two dozen flutes of all sizes, shapes, and keys and headed over to Mountain View for a 1:15 program. I love the looks on their faces as they filed in class by class. They see the flutes and are immediately curious about them. I have always felt it was a big treat to do programs like these. But it is so difficult to cram everything into 45 minutes. The kids always have so many questions. Today was no exception...the time flew by. I tried to play as many of the flutes as I could and get in just the right mix of stories, history and music. The kids were incredibly well-behaved and I believe they all enjoyed the program. As always, I get a crowd of them who come rushing up to me after it's over with bunches of questions. "Can I touch a flute?" " What's that around your neck?" (an eagle bone whistle) "Would you come back and teach me how to play?" "Where can I get a flute?" "How much do they cost?" "How many do you have?"
I hope Ruth will ask me back again next year during their NA studies, because I had a blast today hangin' with the fifth graders! It sure felt good to be back in the classroom!! Comments are closed.
