Last Thursday morning, our little Shrimp & Grits foursome headed out for a visit to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. This wonderful facility was just a few miles away from the campground and was at the top of our must-visit list! The Center specializes in sea turtle rehabilitation, research, and education. Their focus is |
When we entered, we were given a piece of paper that would help us track the life journey of a sea turtle. At five different stations, we had a choice of four embossing stamps. After making our choice, we would read the information relating to it.
Station 2: I am a . . . male
Station 3: I migrated to . . . Sargassum
Station 4: These lived on my shell . . . Columbus Crabs
Station 5: I lived to be . . . an adult
It was a fun way to make our way through the center. Because each of us chose a different stamp and waited until everyone had gotten theirs to reveal the answer, we really took our time at each station. My turtle was the only one to make it to adulthood!
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is a hospital for ill and injured sea turtles. They are the only hospital of its kind in the state of Georgia. In the Center is a large glass window where visitors can actually watch surgery and treatments being performed.
At every recovery tank was a notebook with data about each turtle. It was really interesting to read about the species, type of injury, and treatment of that condition.
