I would be hard pressed to find a better way to start off my day than this... - a cup of coffee - the newest copy of Flea Market Style magazine - a plate of hot, ooey-gooey, yummalicious cinnamon buns with cream cheese icing fresh out of the oven I hope your day started off as divinely as mine!!
One of the many reasons that I fell in love with my house on the corner of N. Ashe Avenue and W. 6th Street was the beautiful trees...two huge hemlocks, a beautiful holly, a stately cedar, four hinoki cypress, several dogwoods, two redbuds, a flowering cherry, and a tremendous pecan. I realize that life is cyclical and that applies to trees, but I just hate it when a tree dies and has to be cut down. Since I moved in way back in 1988, I have lost the grand pecan that threw afternoon shade on the entire back of the house. I have lost two out of three dogwoods to a disease that's stealing our state tree. The tall cedar that graced the corner of my lot is gone too since the city said it impeded a safe view at the intersection and they cut it down. So many trees on such a small lot. And this past Saturday, my gorgeous flowering cherry tree was taken down too. During the drought we had here between 2007 and 2008, the cherry tree became stressed and the dying process began. Each spring, fewer and fewer branches put out those huge, beautiful pink blossoms. This year there was nothing. I finally gave in, accepted that it was gone, and cut it down on Saturday. Here are the before photos... Heavy sigh. Here are the after pictures... If you look carefully in that last photo, you'll notice that the tree isn't entirely gone. Left behind is a big cherry bear. The fellows that chopped the tree down, carved it for me. I'm still upset that the tree is gone, but the bear helps. The circle of life...
Is it the weekend again? OMG this week zipped past me and I didn't get one single Postcard out to you! My bad... The big news of the week is that the Coffee Cup's restoration is complete! Becky and I will be heading north to Jackson, MI on the 17th to meet and greet her, then bring her home to North Carolina! Woohoo!! I also created Book One in The Coffee Cup Trilogy using a special offer from Shutterfly. It was a GOOD week!!
I was mentioned in a post over on the Southern Fried Sisters blog this week about the upcoming Country Living Fair in Atlanta and the place mats I will be selling during our Buy, Sell & Trade days. There are lots of crafty Sisters who share their talents, so I thought I would join in the fun. I've had a really artsy-fartsy week here. You already know about Jackson's sign, but I also created one for my good T@Bbin' buddy Crystal. I made one for her and daughter Katelyn for the Blue Ridge Rally, but since Katelyn is now in China for the year, a new singular camping sign was called for. It will be in the mail to you on Monday Crystal!! The creative juices didn't stop with signs and photos. I also started the Pillowcase Project. I've made a couple cases for pillows in The Coffee Cup and my mind has been racing with other possibilities. Stay tuned! Lenoir-Rhyne University football begins tonight and unless it's raining, I'll be there with Becky and Roger. The Bears are picked to win the conference this year, so we are looking forward to big things. The season kicks off tonight with a big picnic followed by the game at 7:00. GO BEARS!! I gotta scoot because George is coming over to chop down a dead tree in the yard and then Becky and I are meeting Rob and Trisha for lunch at McAllister's Deli. Woohoo.....I hope y'all have a great Saturday too!!
Yesterday while Becky and I were in Salisbury, I spotted a familiar logo painted on the side of a building.....Cheerwine. If you are a North Carolina native, you are familiar with this beverage. Cheerwine is a drink born in the South. It was created in 1917 in Salisbury by a general store owner named L.D. Peeler. This bubbly soft drink, with a hint of wild cherry, became an immediate hit. Folks from all around the county came to LD's store to give it a try. Soon cold cases all over North Carolina were filled with the "Nectar of North Carolina." It was known to put a smile on everyone's lips who gave it a try, and the Cheerwine legend was born. I'm not sure that the Carolina Beverage Company that produces Cheerwine really cares if it becomes popular across the country or not. But I do know that Cheerwine lovers who move away from NC and realize it's not available in their new location, will buy cases of it when they come back to visit! I never really acquired a taste for Cheerwine. It's terribly sweet, super carbonated, and the cherry taste is very tangy for my taste. The diet version is a bit milder and once in a great while, I'll drink one of those.
I wish I was a picker! Every single time that Becky and I go out junkin', I find stuff that would be perfect for my camping friends. Imagine this: a store featuring vintage items just perfect for a glamping Sister or a T@Bbing buddy. Despite having gone to Hillsville, VA yesterday, Becky called this morning about 9:30 and said, "Whatcha doin' today? Wanna go somewhere?" Well, of course I jumped on that and we struck out an hour later for three places we've never been to before...Resettler's Antique Mall in Statesville and two more places in Salisbury. Here's what I would have picked for my store today... Ahhhh.....the daydreams of an imaginary picker. But I did find and buy something very neat and very cheap ($7) for The Coffee Cup! I hope you are in the middle of a fantastic Labor Day Weekend. Have fun and be safe out there. Sharon the Picker over and out!
